The Department of Chemistry organized an insightful guest lecture on the topic “Chemistry of Everyday Gadgets”, delivered by Dr. Preethi G, Associate Professor & HOD, Dept. of Chemistry, MVJ College of Engineering and Technology, Bengaluru on 24/05/2025 at 6th floor, Seminar Hall. The session attracted enthusiastic participation from students and faculty alike, eager to understand how chemistry plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the gadgets we use daily.

Dr. Preethi G, an expert in nanoscience and applied sciences, began the lecture by highlighting the importance of chemistry in modern technology. She explained how fundamental chemical principles underpin the design, performance, and sustainability of devices ranging from smartphones and laptops to household appliances.

Dr. Preethi G highlighted key topics including the chemistry of lithium-ion and solid-state batteries, the role of organic compounds in OLED and LCD displays, and the use of chemical sensors in wearable devices. She also explained the importance of quantam dots, protective coatings and lightweight materials that improve gadget durability. Importantly, she addressed the environmental impact of e-waste and the need for greener materials and recycling. The session ended with an engaging Q&A, where students explored topics like eco-friendly gadgets, sustainable technologies, and careers in green chemistry. She encouraged students to cultivate curiosity about the materials and processes behind everyday technologies, emphasizing that innovation often arises from a deep understanding of chemical interactions.
