The 5-day workshop on “Advancements in MEMS Technology” was organized by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Gopalan College of Engineering and Management (GCEM), Bengaluru, from 3rd to 7th March 2025, to provide participants with in-depth knowledge of MEMS technology, including its fabrication, packaging, sensor applications, and RF MEMS advancements.
The workshop began with an inaugural function, where Shri. Vijay Kumar Pujari (Ex-Scientist-G, ISRO) and Dr. K.J. Vinoy (Chairman, ECE Dept., IISc, Bengaluru) delivered keynote addresses on MEMS and interdisciplinary technologies.
On Day 1, participants attended sessions on MEMS fundamentals and fabrication processes, led by Dr. Selvaraj S (STARC) and Mr. Dobbidi Ashok Kumar (STARC), covering key concepts and manufacturing techniques
On Day 2, Dr. Shankara Prasad (IIT Guwahati) presented a lecture on IC packaging, discussing chip integration and packaging trends, followed by an industry visit to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, where participants observed MEMS applications in defense and communication systems.
On Day 3, the focus shifted to MEMS packaging technologies, with sessions on LTCC Packaging by Mr. Jittuga Chaitanya (STARC) and MEMS Packaging Techniques by Mr. I. Vijayakumar (STARC), followed by an industry visit to Semiconductor Technology & Applied Research Centre (STARC), Bengaluru, where participants learned about MEMS manufacturing, testing, and packaging methods.
On Day 4, a full-day session on MEMS Sensors and Their Practical Implementation was conducted by Mr. Amarnath Karthik (Director, Embuz Technologies, Coimbatore), covering accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, and their applications in automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial domains, with hands-on demonstrations.
On Day 5, the focus was on RF MEMS technology, with Dr. M.H. Kori (Technological Adviser, SAGE, USA) presenting RF MEMS applications in wireless communication, followed by Prof. H.S. Bhatia Singh (Former Chairman, IETE, Bengaluru) discussing RF MEMS design challenges and advancements, and concluding with the valedictory ceremony, certificate distribution, and feedback session.
The workshop provided valuable insights into MEMS fabrication, packaging, sensor technologies, and RF MEMS applications, combining expert lectures, practical exposure, and industry visits to BEL and STARC, enabling participants to network with professionals, enhance their technical skills, and gain industry-relevant knowledge, ultimately bridging the gap between academia and industry in the field of MEMS and semiconductor technology.
We sincerely thank our Management for giving this opportunity to organize five days Workshop on "Advancements in MEMS Technology".
