Civil engineering is the oldest and broadest branch of engineering. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include water works, sewers, dams, power plants, transmission towers, railroads, highways, bridges, tunnels, irrigation canals, river Navigation, traffic Control, mass Transit, airport runways, terminals, industrial plant buildings, skyscrapers, etc.

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2010 offering a four-year undergraduate course leading to Bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering affiliated to Visveswaraya Technological University, Belgaum with an intake of 60 students. The department has been recognized as a VTU-research centre in the year 2019. The Department is well equipped with full-fledged laboratories & state of art infrastructure facilities supported by a team of extremely dedicated, well qualified and experienced faculty members. Industrial visits, dam site visits, visit to water and wastewater treatment plants form an integral part of their UG programme. An ICI (INDIAN CONCRETE INSTITUTE) students’ chapter is in place with regular seminars/workshops/webinars on the current trends being conducted, as a part of this chapter. A two-week long survey camp is also conducted to enable the students obtain extensive hands-on experience in the use of land surveying instruments and in the essentials of survey practice. Forum activities such as model making competitions are held annually. Guest lecturers are arranged regularly by inviting experts from Industries as well as academics, with special emphasis on industry-institute interaction

Career Opportunities:

There is a wide gap between the requirement and the availability of Civil Engineers in all sectors. The opportunities open to forthcoming Civil Engineers are enormous. The challenge is to prepare the students graduating from the department to achieve the required skills and knowledge.

Civil Engineering graduates are highly sought after by design firms, engineering consultants, materials manufacturers, and government agencies, in addition to contracting and construction companies. Graduates will have an option to work as project engineers, structural designers, transportation planners, technical sales engineers, engineers at construction site, design researchers and so on. The field remains very popular with a number of industries, not only in construction, but also with government agencies such as roads and transport authorities, electricity and water authorities, and real estate development.

Best wishes,
