Computer Aided Design Lab

The Computer Aided Design (CAD) Lab helps to acquire the basic knowledge of computer which can be used for analyse, design and drafting of various civil engineering components using computers application. Much software’s are available which facilitates the numerical work of various calculations and estimations. The software’s provide inbuilt tools for analysis and design of structures, drawing of structures, construction management, design of foundations, water resources, transportation and environmental management, remote sensing and Geographical information System (GIS) application. Software’s such as AUTO CAD, QGIS, ETABS, STADD PRO V8i, MS Project Software etc. provide a platform for civil engineering innovations by the students.

Engineering Geology Lab

In Geology lab, identification of various minerals and rocks and studying the physical properties is done. Study of geological maps and determine the topographical terrain using topographical map. The materials include detailed procedures, exercises based on the problem that develops quantitative problem solving skills, engineering geology applications.

Building Materials Testing Lab

Material Testing lab is used for testing of common materials of construction, to study their behaviour when subjected to external loading and to obtain their mechanical properties, which are used directly or indirectly in the design of structural elements. It is used for the determination of the basic properties of building materials such as bricks, sand and steel. Has the facility to determine the tensile and compressive strength of steel, wood, roofing tiles etc. using Universal Testing Machine (UTM).

Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulic Machines Lab

This lab provides a way to determine the various parameters related to fluid flow in pipes and in open channels. In this lab, the characteristics of pumps and turbines are also studied. This lab work involves determining the viscosity and mass density of fluids, friction factor, minor& major loss coefficients, and coefficient of discharge of constriction meters, orifices, mouth pieces, notches and weirs, characteristics of flow profiles and hydraulic jump and characteristics of pumps and turbines and verification of momentum theorem are thereby studied and experimented in the lab.

Geotechnical Engineering Lab

Geotechnical Laboratory helps in identifying the engineering and physical properties of soil and its application in the various fields of construction. The engineering properties include compressibility, permeability, compaction, consolidation, shear strength and bearing capacity of soil, where as the physical properties include specific gravity, density, moisture, consistency limits and shrinkage limits. Laboratory is well-equipped with equipments for evaluating all engineering properties of soils including index properties, compaction characteristics, consolidation characteristics and shear strength of soils.

Concrete and Highway Materials Lab

In the Concrete and highway materials lab, the physical properties of various building construction materials, bitumen are studied. Various tests are performed in the laboratory to determine the properties of concrete materials for specific gravity, soundness, abrasion, water absorption, normal consistency, workability and fineness etc. Test is done to find the perfect concrete blend for a durable construction and as well as tests on bitumen for pavement construction. The mix of material proportion is carried out to maintain integrity.

Environmental Engineering Lab

The objective of this laboratory is to inculcate among students environmental awareness, determine by making them aware of qualities of water and waste water. Determination of pH, acidity, alkalinity, chlorides, hardness, chorine demand, turbidity, conductivity, and impurities in water and BOD, DO and COD of waste water. The aim of this lab is to portrait environmental engineering testing procedures.

Surveying Lab

Measurement of distance is done using different types and lengths tapes/chains, bearing of lines using Prismatic and Surveyors compasses, reduced levels and contours using level etc. are determined in this lab. The vertical and horizontal angle between two points can be measured using special instruments like Theodolite. The elevations of the points can be measured using the dumpy levels. Use of modern equipment like Total Station is done in Extensive Survey Practice for determining the altitudes, azimuths by transferring the bench mark. This laboratory course will help the students to understand the theoretical concepts learned in the course. The surveying laboratory familiarizes the students with the surveying equipments.
