Architecture Travel Theories By : Kirthana Suresh

We all have travelled and experienced memorable trips.

Travel takes us out of our comfort zones and inspires us to see and experience new things. It is a powerful tool in shaping the perception of the modern world. It plays an ever-growing role in architectural and urban cultures. Inextricably linked to political and ideological issues, travel redefines places and landscapes through buildings and infrastructure.

The art of travelling is exploring the city to its maximum, and by doing so one gets the essence of the city or place, which helps him to connect even better with the architecture, especially for the architects. In the age of the camera and mobile phones, travel is bound up with new kinds of imaginaries & private records and the value of architectural heritage increasingly rests on the images. To learn architectural history, we students often go through image collections.

The way a common man travels is different than how an architect travels and observes.

People like to travel for many kinds of pleasure. They like to see beautiful places, explore cultures & cuisines, capture moments and enjoy the atmosphere to its fullest. Learning is a strong reason why people love to travel. They tend to experience something unfamiliar and leave with new skills or knowledge.

Whereas, an architect also travels to explore new places, experience and learn more. But they also observe everything, find inspiration from unexplored places and believe that true essence of architecture lies in its user’s experience.

Being an architect, imagination and exploration is the key of design. When an architect travels, he will:

  • ATTAIN KNOWLEDGE - know about the place’s location, history, culture, etc.
  • LEARNING FROM FORMS AND STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE - know about the unique design or feature of a particular building (shape, purpose, construction techniques, materials, different terrains and design concepts of the place).
  • EXPLORE THE UNEXPECTED - know about the place travelled and unless the place is being explored, they won’t be known to the world.
  • SAVE MONEY - While travelling, it’s better to spend less on fancy restaurants and stay at economical places so that the cost can be recovered in the commute to explore other places.
  • TRAVEL INFLUENCER - In social media, sharing your experience and creating a blog or a travel page of the places you visit can help others to learn about that place.
  • ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND SKETCHES - The best way to observe details in a building is to sketch it out. On the other hand, capturing few pictures in various angles and making journey videos.
  • FEEL THE PLACE - Experiencing the building by observing, walking around and feel the sense of touch.

To conclude, traveling is an extraordinary experience every person needs to try. It reveals a whole new and exciting world out there, opens out your inner strength and presents with unforgettable adventures.

Thank you.
