Two day workshop on Aeromodelling RC Aircraft

The two-day Aeromodelling RC Aircraft Workshop conducted at the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Gopalan College of Engineering and Management, was a comprehensive and engaging event tailored for aeromodelling enthusiasts. With an impressive participation of 90 students, the workshop aimed to provide a deep understanding of aeromodelling principles and hands-on experience in building and flying RC aircraft.

Day 1: Theory Session (3rd October 2023)

The first day of the workshop began with a stimulating theoretical session facilitated by Ms. Gouthami T S. The diverse topics covered included:

Introduction to Aeromodelling and Its Types: Participants were introduced to the various branches of aeromodelling and its wide-ranging applications in the field of aeronautical engineering.

Understanding Flight and Different Types of Flight: The fundamental principles of flight, encompassing lift, thrust, drag, and gravity, were comprehensively explained. Different flight types, such as level flight, climb, and descent, were discussed in detail.

Main Parts of an Aircraft: Students delved into the components of an aircraft, exploring the functions of wings, fuselage, and control surfaces. The session emphasized the critical role each part plays in ensuring stability and control during flight.

Principles of Aerodynamics and Forces Acting on Aircraft: Theoretical concepts such as Bernoulli's Principle and Newton’s Laws were explored, shedding light on the aerodynamic forces influencing the flight of an aircraft.

Exploration of Gliders: The session included an in-depth discussion on the history, world records, materials used, and various types of gliders. Factors affecting glider performance and strategies to enhance it were thoroughly examined.

Day 2: Practical Sessions (4th October 2023)

Morning Session: Fabrication and Assembly
In the morning session of the second day, participants actively engaged in the practical aspects of aeromodelling. Guided by the expertise of Mr. Varun Reddy and Mr. Kavansagar, students enthusiastically fabricated aircraft parts and assembled their RC planes. This hands-on experience allowed them to bridge the gap between theory and practice, mastering construction and assembly techniques.

Afternoon Session: Hands-on Flying Experience
The afternoon session witnessed the culmination of the workshop as all 90 participants took their assembled RC aircraft to the field for flight tests. Under the watchful eyes of the resource persons and workshop organizers, students piloted their creations, skilfully applying the principles they had learned. This thrilling hands-on experience not only showcased their newly acquired skills but also instilled confidence and enthusiasm for further exploration in the field of aeromodelling.

Conclusion:

The Aeromodelling RC Aircraft Workshop at Gopalan College of Engineering and Management was an outstanding success, made possible by the enthusiastic participation of 90 students. The integration of theoretical knowledge, practical fabrication, and hands-on flying experience provided a holistic understanding of aeromodelling concepts. The expert guidance provided by Ms. Gouthami T S, Mr. Varun Reddy, and Mr. Kavansagar, coupled with the active participation of the attendees, made the workshop an unforgettable and impactful event. The Department of Aeronautical Engineering extends its gratitude to all participants and resource persons, marking the workshop as a pivotal moment in the journey of these future aeromodelling enthusiasts.
